The deformation characters and associations of metamorphic rocks in the southern foothills of the Altai Mountains indicated that there should occur two tectonic deformational provinces in the areas, i.e., the south east tectonic deformational province and the north west tectonic deformational province, with a sinistral shear zone, the Irek fault, being a boundary of the both. The obviously different tectonic patterns and tectonic styles between the two provinces were discussed in the paper. The deformation characters of the rocks in the whole southern foothill area might be regionalization; and in the southeast part of the area, the eye catching structure was a group of NW striking thrust faults, thrusted towards the southwest. Such a tectonic framework resulted from varied basement rocks, unique deformation mechanism and different deformation metamorphic history in the two tectonic deformational provinces in the southern foothills of the Altai Mountains.
