The vitrinite reflectance of coal in the Tong’er Coal Mine was systematically measured by using MPV COMACT microphotometer. The three optical axes of the vitrinite in the mining area were mutually perpendicular. The dip angle of maximum reflectance mostly focused on 68°～69°, with three direction being about 280°, 90° and 180°, respectively. The ellipsoidal deformation of reflectance in the studied area was characterized by extend type or flaser type strain. The result indicated that the orientation of maximum vitrinite reflectance might be related with the local structural position of the sample in addition to the stress field of the regional tectonics. The differential values between Romax and Romin decreased with increasing of the distance to the fault, and a sudden change occurred near the both sides of the fault, which might be helpful for the prediction of faults in the coal mining.
