The REE geochemical characters and formational conditions of the black shale series in the Lower Cambrian Niutitang Formation in northern Guizhou were discussed based on ICP-MS analytical data. The ΣREE content of the black shale series reached its peak value in the Mo-bearing ore bed of metal-rich shales, and reduced upwards and downwards in the section, which might be caused by a sedimentary process with an abnormal seawater. The chondrite-normalized REE patterns was characterized with a curve tilting to the right and LREE enrichment. The negative anomalies of Eu and Ce showed that the black shale series were deposited in an epeiric sea environment. The REE patterns, plus La/Yb vs. Ce/La and La/Yb vs. REE diagrams, indicated that the black shale series resulted from mixing of normal seawater sediments and hot bittern seawater sediments from magma.
