The mechanical behaviour of a rock mass should be considered as a reaction of its structure upon the external loading. After discussing the geological history of the rock mass and the geological process of its structure,the author points out that the rock mass is separated by a set of struc- tural planes,such as beddings,joints,faults,etc.,into structural blocks of different sizes and forms.The presence of weak blocks and planes,causing the heterogeneity and dis- continuity,is the internal factor of the mechanical behaviour. By analysing a lot of field test data it was shown that the rock mass is a hetero- geneous and anisotropic medium in mechanical properties,viscously elasto-plastic for de- formability,and discontinuous in strength.However,the author emphasizes that these should not be thought as constants,but vary with structural conditions,which include the properties and combination types of structural planes,the geometric forms and properties of structural blocks.Therefore,it is necessary to define the yielding and strengthening coefficients,plastic-,elastic- and rheologicstrain ratios,anisotropic index and so on. In the conclusion an idea is suggested that the close connection between the mechani- cal tests and structural analysis of a rock mass would be a reliable approach to the study of rock mass mechanics.
