Yttrofluorite, a rare-earth mineral, is an isomorphism of fluorite. As shown by experiments its single crystal is similar to fluorite, being characterized by excellent optical properties such as broad transmission wave band and high transparency, while its refractive index and hardness slightly greater than that of fluorite. Its cleavage is less developed but its mechanical strength better than that of fluorite. Its thermal expansion coefficient and solubility in water are smaller than that of fluorite, hence tending to grow easily into a large and fairly homogeneous crystal that should be laser in room temperature as a laser materials when mixed with neodynium. Consequently, yttrofluorite may be considered as an excellent optical material much better than fluorite.
