The rockmass strength of jointed sedimentary rock often shows a distinct scale effect. In fact, it is a reflection of rockmass structure effect. This view has been confirmed by our tests on the pressure-resistance of jointed slates in situ. Moreover, the results from these tests with jointed slate specimens of different size in situ indicate that the pressure-resistence strength of rockmass is distinctly related to the structure bodies numbers in rockmass rather than the size of specimens. Taking into consideration the results of tests and using statistic method, we found that the relationship between the uniaxial compression strength of slate rockmass and the structure bodies number N in test-specimen, can be expressed as δm=24+236N-0.36.
