Surface heat flow is one key geophysical parameter to represent the thermal regime of the Earth,and records the information of various deep Earth processes and energy balance. Measurement and compilation of global heat flow is a fundamental work in solid geophysics. In this article,we reviewed the major advancement of global heat flow related studies over past 20 years,including the introduction of global heat flow database and compilation,and showing heat flow pattern and interpretation. More important,some key concepts or issues in continental and oceanic heat flow studies (for instance,heat flow province,partitioning coefficient of crustal and mantle heat flow,thermal model of oceanic lithosphere and hydrothermal circulation,etc.) and global heat budget and its tempo-spatial variation are all presented here in detail. Finally,some problems concerning heat flow compilation and utilization are discussed,along with some possible research topics in future.
